CO₂ neutrality by 2030

 Teaser_LG

TDK Electronics aims to be CO2 neutral by 2030. Already by 2025, electricity is to be purchased only from renewable energies. And in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement, climate neutrality is to be achieved throughout the entire value chain by 2050.

“For us as a company, one of the most important tasks is to contribute to the sustainable development of society," says Dr. Klaus Moertl, Environmental Protection Officer and CSR Coordinator at the company. “We are already on a very good path here. Around 85 percent of the energy we need for production at our sites is electrical energy. Almost 90 percent of it comes from renewable energies.“

In addition, the solar energy that TEG obtains from its own and exclusively used photovoltaic systems has increased ten times in just three years - from 2019 to 2022. The plants in Deutschlandsberg, Johor Bahru, Kalyani, Málaga, Nashik, Szombathely, and Šumperk currently produce their own solar power. New systems are to be installed in Batam, Kutina, and Xiamen. In Kalyani, Málaga and Šumperk, the existing installations are to be significantly enlarged. “Especially in view of further rising prices for fossil fuels, these investments not only make a lot of sense ecologically, but also economically,” says Moertl.

50 percent less CO2, water consumption and waste

Through these and other projects, TEG has reduced its absolute CO2 emissions by more than 50 percent since 2018. Water consumption relative to sales has also fallen by more than half since 2015, and the same applies to the amount of waste.

But to achieve CO2 neutrality by 2030 and climate neutrality throughout the value chain by 2050, further actions are required: “We will continue to consistently save energy in all processes, buy in green energy or produce it ourselves, and eliminate fossil fuels and all other greenhouse gases in addition to CO2,” says Moertl. “If necessary, we will also take compensation measures.” To reduce further emissions in the supply chain, TEG promotes the development of sustainable products and the circular economy. In addition, the company relies on cooperation with suppliers who are also committed to climate protection.
