Multilayer Technology

 Product 1

Deutschlandsberg has already successfully launched many product innovations on the market, for example the CeraCharge®: When it has been launched in 2019, it was the world's first rechargeable solid-state battery in SMD multilayer technology. It consists of a ceramic multilayer solid state, so it does not contain any liquid electrolytes. This makes it particularly safe. The CeraCharge® was awarded, among others, with the special VERENA prize in 2019, which is part of the annual Austrian State Prize for Innovation. Leading international media in China and Japan selected the CeraCharge® as Product of the Year.

The CeraLink® is used primarily in drive inverters - in hybrid and electric vehicles as well as in industrial electronics. The ceramic capacitor enables fast switching and short switching cycles at high temperatures. It requires little space and can withstand temperatures from minus 40 to 150 degrees Celsius. The CeraLink® was also selected as Product of the Year by several international media in Europe and Asia.

Piezo Technology

 Product 4

In piezo technology, the site is working on product solutions based on piezoelectric materials in 3 technologies (monolithic, multilayer and thin-film technology). The application portfolio is very broad and ranges from simple to complex actuators and sensors, acoustic beepers and loudspeakers, haptic feedback elements and ultrasonic applications for level and distance determination to special high-performance capacitors and plasma generators.

The PowerHap™ product family includes piezo actuators based on multilayer piezo components for use in touchscreens and multifunctional user interfaces in cars, smartphones and tablets, household appliances, industrial control systems and medical devices. The component features unrivaled performance values and provides outstanding haptic feedback. PowerHap™ was awarded with the innovation prize of an international trade publisher in China.

The piezo-based CeraPlas® cold plasma generator is also very multifunctional. It can be used to activate, print, label and bond plastic surfaces, or to decontaminate surfaces or volumes. Inactivation of the corona virus is also possible with this technology.

Ceramic Press Technology

Thermistors are ceramic components whose electrical resistance increases or decreases rapidly when a certain temperature is exceeded. This characteristic makes them ideal for use in many applications of modern electrical engineering and electronics, for example as safety devices against current overload or short-circuit protection in motors as well as self-regulating heating elements or temperature sensors in heating plates and hot glue guns or in cars for auxiliary heating and interior heating.

Technologies of the Future

 Product 5

The Corporate Research and Development department is responsible for basic development for all materials, products and processes. In an agile innovation process, digital design tools and state-of-the-art analysis and measurement methods are used to synthesize new materials and develop and test prototypes and demonstrators. The solutions developed here are used to develop new products and open up new fields of application. Cooperation with national and international universities and other research institutions is an integral part of this innovation process.

As one of several TDK research centers worldwide, the R&D Center Europe at the Deutschlandsberg site focuses on application and system development for automotive and industrial electronics. The Process Innovation Center works to build and coordinate know-how and expertise for key technologies such as robotics, 3D printing and Industry 4.0.

 Pic

The site is committed to producing as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible. The plant has been sourcing electricity from 100 percent hydroelectric power for many years and is working consistently to further reduce its energy and gas requirements with many projects and measures.

In 2021, for example, the site installed a photovoltaic system on the roof of the warehouse and shipping hall that generates around 500 megawatt hours of electricity per year. This solar power is used directly in production.

A new cooling system with heat recovery reduces gas demand by 6,000 megawatt hours per year and electricity consumption by 600 megawatt hours. A further 1,600 megawatt hours of electricity are reduced in cleanroom production by a new high-pressure humidification system and a new heat recovery system. Many other measures, such as the switch to LED lights with a saving of around 400 megawatt hours per year, are being implemented to further reduce CO emissions. Overall, TDK Electronics aims to be CO₂-neutral by 2030. In accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement, climate neutrality is to be achieved throughout the entire value chain by 2050.

At the Deutschlandsberg site, more than 2100 tons of ceramic materials are produced annually and tested for their quality for further processing.
