RoHS II

Products suitable for use in devices pursuant to Article 2, 2011/65/EU that have been modified by Directive (EU) 2015/863

The EU Directive on RoHS II (Directive 2011/65/EU) came into force on January 3, 2013, and replaced Directive 2002/95/EC on RoHS I. The new version of RoHS was published on July 1, 2011, as Directive 2011/65/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council dated June 8, 2011, in Official Journal No. L 174/88.

The Delegated Directive (EU) 2015/863 of the Commission to amend Annex II to Directive 2011/65/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council with regard to substances that are subject to restrictions was published in Official Journal No. L 137/10 on June 4, 2015.

RoHS II contains several amendments of relevance to manufacturers of electrical and electronic products. The most important differences relating to RoHS I are as follows:

Scope

• The requirements placed on all electrical and electronic products, cables and spare parts with regard to complete conformity were extended until July 22, 2019.
• Key terms (Article 3) such as homogenous material are explained.

Prohibition of new substances

• The list of restricted substances is reviewed at regular intervals by the European Commission.

Exceptions

• RoHS II conditions clear and more transparent rules on the granting, renewing and withdrawing of exceptions.

Consistency with other EU legislation

• RoHS II is part of the New Legislative Framework and thus concerns CE labeling and statements of conformity (including the harmonized standard EN 50581).

With effect from July 22, 2019, RoHS II applies to all categories of electrical and electronic products. As in RoHS I, however, electronic components are not directly affected.

The components featured in TDK Electronics’ list of RoHS-compatible products are therefore suitable for use in electrical and electronic products that are governed by RoHS II.
