3.5 million cases①, 90,000 deaths, and 7 billion euros in costs② every year – these are the statistics for hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) in Europe published by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Not to mention the personal suffering of those affected and the grief of those left behind. That said, the ECDC estimates that up to 50% of HAIs could be prevented.
One of the main causes of healthcare-associated infections is the formation of biofilms in tubes, hoses, and catheters, e.g. during cardiac and urinary catheterization, dialysis, and mechanical ventilation. These biofilms remain from previous treatments as they are very difficult to remove or neutralize without wearing out the tubing.
With MediPlas, TDK has developed a technology that can remove these biofilms without the use of toxic input chemicals and/or high temperatures and pressures, such as in an autoclave. In addition, this technology saves time in the sterilization process itself.
