EMI Chokes

Ring Core Line filters for Power Lines and DC Link

TDK CeraLink capacitors

Electrical and electronic equipment generates common-mode interference. To meet the safety requirements within the leakage current limits, chokes with a high asymmetrically effective inductance must be used. Common-mode chokes with a closed ring core are especially suitable for this purpose.

To suppress differential-mode interferences, chokes with iron powder ring cores are used. Double chokes with coupled windings bring advantages in EMI performance.

With manufacturing locations in Europe as well as in China and India, TDK is focusing on high-volume production for the global market.

TDK offers standard products as well as customized solutions and we continuously expand our product portfolio with new innovative solutions.

Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of using a ring core choke?

A common mode choke in the EMI filtering circuit helps to achieve electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) by suppressing conducted common-mode noise in all types of power transmission and power lines. The closed ring core structure achieves the maximum in suppression of common-mode interferences and provides the best geometry for magnetic flux.

Do EMI chokes generate heat?

They do generate heat which is proportional to the power loss. The amount of power is calculated using the standard I2×Rdc equation, where Rdc is the total DC-resistance of the choke, and I is the applied DC current or the RMS value of AC current. EMI chokes are designed and intended to suppress high-frequency noise and there is usually no significant loss generated by this in the core or windings that might contribute additionally to the heating.

Whats about polarity?

The mounting direction does not impact the operating characteristics of common mode chokes.

What is the difference between a ring core choke and D core choke?

Typically, D-core chokes achieve higher pulse withstanding capability while ring core topology generates much less stray magnetic fields.

What is meant by “special winding technique”?

The main difference to standard coils is that many of our ring core chokes feature a special winding structure, allowing higher resonance frequencies to be reached even with very high number of turns.

 5 FAQ pic

What is the difference between a common- mode choke and differential-mode choke?

Common-mode chokes suppress noise flowing in the same direction in all lines, differential-mode chokes work with signals or noise flowing in opposite directions in a pair of lines.

Is it possible to apply higher current than rated, even for a short period time?

Even though it depends on the magnitude and time of the applied current, the warranty of our products doesn’t cover the usage with a higher current than rated at the specific ambient temperature. Currents deviating from rated values can only be applied in accordance with the corresponding derating curves given in the data sheets.

Why is there no marking for the winding direction on the EMI chokes?

The mounting/assembly direction of the common mode these chokes does not impact the operating characteristics of it.
