CeraLink® in modular flex-assembly technology
TDK Corporation has extended the lineup of proven CeraLink® capacitors with CeraLink FA types in modular flex-assembly technology. This space-saving design connects two, three or ten identical capacitors in parallel over the same terminals in order to increase the capacitance. The new CeraLink FA types are available for rated voltages of 500 V DC, 700 V DC and 900 V DC. Depending on the voltage and number of capacitors, this results in rated capacitance values of between 0.5 µF and 10 µF. One particular feature of these capacitors based on PLZT (lead lanthanum zirconate titanate) ceramics is their high permissible operating temperature of 150 °C. The FA types have a width of 7.4 mm and a height of 9.1 mm; while the lengths are 6.3 mm, 9.3 mm or 30.3 mm. Despite their small size, they feature a ripple current capability of up to 47 ARMS.
One major advantage of the parallel switching is the extremely low ESR values that are significantly below 10 mΩ at high frequencies in the range from 0.1 to 1 MHz. With a minimum of 3 nH, the ESL values are also extremely low. Thanks to their low parasitic effects, CeraLink capacitors are ideally suited for converter topologies on the basis of fast-switching semiconductors such as GaN or SiC. Voltage overshoots when switching are significantly lower than with conventional capacitor technologies. Special requirements in terms of size, current capability and temperature can also be met very easily with CeraLink capacitors.
Compact CeraPlas™ HF element for cold plasma
CeraPlas™ HF is a compact cold plasma generator element that is based on a PZT (lead zirconate titanate) ceramic and packaged in a plastic housing. CeraPlas HF measures in at just 47.3 mm x 20 mm x 20 mm and its leads are suitable for soldering.
Further notable features are its low weight, low power consumption and low input voltage. CeraPlas HF can be integrated easily and without any special safety measures for protection against high voltage in plasma systems. The new plasma generator is able to ionize different gases – including air – under normal pressure. Because the temperature remains below 50 °C, heat-sensitive materials can be treated with plasma. The combination of compact dimensions and low power consumption therefore makes CeraPlas technology ideal for battery-powered handheld devices.
CeraPlas has a wide variety of applications. It can be used for the surface treatment of plastics, for example, to make them easier to print or write on. Another area of applications is the disinfection of wounds or the sterilization of devices or foods. Moreover, the generation of ozone also enables unpleasant odors to be eliminated.
ThermoFuse varistors: Compact overvoltage protection with an integrated fuse
The EPCOS ThermoFuse™ family of fuse protected varistors has been extended with the new compact NT14 and NT20 series. The new ThermoFuse components feature a footprint that fits into existing circuit board layouts. The NT14 series (disk diameter 14 mm) is designed to absorb maximum surge currents with an 8/20-μs pulse of 6 kA at rated voltages of between 130 VRMS and 680 VRMS, while the NT20 series (disk diameter 20 mm) has a surge current capability with an 8/20-μs pulse of 10 kA at rated voltages of between 130 VRMS and 750 VRMS. The NT14 and NT20 series offer a maximum energy absorption of up to 220 J and 480 J for 2 ms, respectively. Both series are available in 2-leaded and 3-leaded types, with the third lead used to monitor whether the fuse has been activated.
ThermoFuse varistors are uniquely designed disk varistors that are connected in series with a thermally coupled fuse and are therefore intrinsically safe. If the varistor overheats, the patented thermal fuse trips and isolates the varistor from the grid with unrivalled dependability. This prevents any potential damage on the PCB or to components located near the varistor and increases the reliability of the equipment to be protected. Thanks to their thermal resistance and flame-retardant design of the epoxy coating, the ThermoFuse NT series meet UL 94 V-0 requirements, and are also listed as Type 4CA in UL 1449, 4th edition.
Robust Y2 capacitors with an increased rated voltage
A new series of EPCOS MKP Y2 capacitors for EMI suppression offers a permissible rated voltage of 350 V AC in contrast to conventional types that are designed for rated voltages of 300 V AC. The capacitances of the B3203* series range from 4.7 nF to 1.2 µF. Even under harsh environmental conditions, the capacitors offer a stable capacitance value. They are certified according to IEC 60384-14:2013/AMD1:2016 and classified in accordance with "Grade III high robustness under high humidity Test B". This is verified by a temperature, humidity, bias (THB) test at 85 °C, 85 % relative humidity and 350 V AC operating voltage, at which a capacitance drop of no more than 10 percent may occur. The maximum operating temperature is 110 °C
The capacitors are approved in accordance with UL and EN and qualified to AEC-Q200. Depending on their capacitance, they are available with a lead spacing of 15 mm (B32032*), 22.5 mm (B32033*), 27.5 mm (B32034*), or 37.5 mm (B32036*). The case and the epoxy resin sealing comply with UL94 V-0.
The possible applications of the new Y2 capacitors include EMI suppression in filters that are subjected to harsh environment conditions and demand higher rated voltages, such as those in photovoltaic inverters or automotive applications.
Compact, high-performance 3-line EMC filters
The B84243* series of EPCOS 3-line EMC filters has been expanded to include 10 new types for currents of up to 280 A. All 18 types in the series are designed for a rated voltage of 530 V AC. The performance of this series of filters has been optimized for adherence to limit values in accordance with EN 61800−3:2004+A1:2011 for motor cable lengths of either up to 25 m (C1) or 50 m (C2). The metal cases of the filters are designed with IP20 protection and, depending on the type, have compact dimensions of between 190 x 40 x 95 mm and 450 x 170 x 230 mm. Thanks to the highly saturation resistant chokes, parasitic asymmetric currents can be reliably controlled even in the case of longer motor cables.
A further advantage of the new B84243* series is the low leakage current that also permits operation in a 30 mA RCD environment. For smaller, hand-operated equipment the leakage current must be below 3.5 mA. For this reason, the 3-A version (B84243A8003U000) has been designed for a leakage current of 1.9 mA at 400 V AC. One important safety aspect is the short discharge time to <60 V within one second for the types rated at up to 44 A.
Redundant 3D HAL® technology based magnetic sensor with outstanding output flexibility
TDK’s portfolio of Dual-Die Hall-effect sensors has been expanded with the new Micronas HAR 379x sensors for multidimensional magnetic field measurements in safety-critical automotive applications according to ISO 26262 rules and in industrial applications. The new sensors come with a digital output: besides pulse-width modulation (PWM) output, the SENT protocol according to the latest generation of SAEJ2716 (rev. 4) is also supported. HAR 379x is the Dual-Die SMD package version of the HAC 37xy family using the proprietary Micronas 3D HAL® technology for detecting angles in a range between 0° and 360° (end-of-shaft and through-shaft setup) as well as linear movement or position.
The HAR 379x sensors' versatile programming characteristics and its high accuracy make the HAR 379x the perfect system solution for gear selector applications – especially because of the possibility to provide the magnetic field amplitude in combination with the angle information. Both parameters are made available via the fast channel of the SENT interface. Additionally, the magnetic field amplitude information enables the required push-functionality. The device fits perfectly into applications where linear movements have to be measured, e.g. in dual-clutch transmission applications, for clutch pedal position detection, as engine stroke sensor, for transmission position measurement, or for cylinder and valve position sensing.
