HVDC grid in China

December 14, 2018

Capacitors enable clean power for the Olympics

TDK has signed a contract with State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) to supply EPCOS power capacitors for the world’s biggest HVDC grid project of its kind. The capacitors will play a crucial role in providing clean energy from remote wind, solar and hydroelectric energy sources for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

EPCOS power capacitors are key components in HVDC converter stations.

The power capacitors, which will be produced at the Málaga plant in Spain, will be used in the Zhangbei HVDC project in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area between Beijing and Zhangbei, a city about 250 kilometers northwest of the Chinese capital. The HVDC grid features both the world’s highest voltage level (550 kV) and the largest transmission capacity. The EPCOS capacitors are key components in the converter stations that transform the AC current fed in at the start of every HVDC link into DC current ready for long-haul transmission. They are also installed in the converter stations that convert the DC current back to AC at the other end so that the electricity can be fed back into the grid.

The contract between TDK and SGCC, China’s state-owned power utility, and the latter's subsidiaries, the NARI and the Xuji Groups, was signed at the China International Import Expo in Shanghai, the first national import trade show to be held in China.
