“Poverty can affect anyone. We help.” Under this motto, the Muenchner Tafel association has been supporting people in need with food for more than 25 years. Today, 700 volunteers are working to provide around 23,000 people with more than 125,000 kilos of food free of charge every week. Most donations come from overproduction, have typing errors on the label or have damaged outer packaging.
This year, for the first time, the Muenchner Tafel has set up an emergency phone number for people who cannot spare money for food. “Individuals and families living on basic welfare benefits see their budgets shrink every day due to inflation,” says Daniela Metz, who does public relations at the association. “The rising prices for food and energy are particularly burdening, and some are faced with the decision to heat or eat.”
“Healthy and sufficient food should be a matter of standard in Germany," says TEG CSO Joachim Thiele. "This makes it all the more worrying that even in prosperous cities like Munich, people would have to go hungry without the voluntary commitment of others. That's why our Christmas donation supports the Muenchner Tafel, which has been helping people on the poverty line for many years.”
The association is financed exclusively by membership fees and donations, which directly benefit the needy. The prerequisite for support is that the guests prove their need for assistance.
